چکیده

This paper describes four recent applications of analytical pyrolysis in environmental science and engineering. In all applications, samples were analyzed in order to provide information about the origin of organic matter or changes to an organic matrix. In the first application, pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and pyrolysis-GC/flame ionization detection (FID) were used to help classify the origin of natural organic matter (NOM) buried in the Antarctic. In the second application, pyrolysis-GC/MS was used to compare the recalcitrance of NOM to biological degradation. In the third application, pyrolysis-GC/FID was used to quantitatively differentiate between lipogenic NOM and petroleum contamination in highly organic soil. In the fourth application, pyrolysis-GC/MS was used to fingerprint organic matter in water samples to help describe the relationship between surface water, groundwater and springs in a complex watershed. In all applications the benefits of analytical pyrolysis are still being discovered. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Use of a Deuterated Internal Standard with Pyrolysis-GC/MS Dimeric Marker Analysis to Quantify Tire Tread Particles in the Environment

Pyrolysis(pyr)-GC/MS analysis of characteristic thermal decomposition fragments has been previously used for qualitative fingerprinting of organic sources in environmental samples. A quantitative pyr-GC/MS method based on characteristic tire polymer pyrolysis products was developed for tread particle quantification in environmental matrices including soil, sediment, and air. The feasibility of ...

Use of dissolved organic matter to support hydrologic investigations in a permafrost-dominated watershed

Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (py-GC/MS) is an analytical tool used to produce a ‘‘fingerprint’’ of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water. Py-GC/MS fingerprinting was used in this research to lend insight into the complex subsurface hydrology of a permafrost-dominated watershed near Fairbanks, AK. Fingerprinting analysis was conducted on groundwater, artesian spring, and stre...

Pyrolysis products of PCBs.

Model compound studies which were previously done for impurities and environmental residues of chlorophenols and for wastes of chlorination processes were extended to the impurities and pyrolysis products of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Model compounds were commercial products or synthesized and their structures proven by spectroscopic methods. These models were used as analytical referenc...

Comparative Analysis of Pyrolysis Products from a Variety of Herbaceous Canadian Crop Residues

Interest in recovering and valorizing agricultural biomass residues has increased in recent years in response to emerging economic opportunities and the potential for more sustainable use of renewable and nonrenewable resources. Agricultural crop residues are a major source of lignocellulose, with considerable potential for use as a renewable resource and lignin’s polyphenolic structure makes i...

Gas and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry detection of the urinary metabolites of UR-144 and its major pyrolysis product.

Studies on the pyrolysis of the synthetic cannabinoid agonist UR-144 ((1-pentyl-1H-indol-3-yl)(2,2,3,3-tetramethylcyclopropyl)methanone) have shown that its major pyrolysis product is a tetramethylcyclopropane ring-opened alkene. Considering that smoking is a common way of ingesting synthetic cannabimimetics, the presence of the metabolites of this pyrolysis product would be expected in biologi...
